Cost and Performance Comparison of an Earth-Orbiting Optical Communication Relay Transceiver and a Ground-Based Optical Receiver Subnet

چکیده
Optical communications can provide high-data-rate telemetry from deep-space probes with subsystems that have lower mass, consume less power, and are smaller than their radio frequency (RF) counterparts. However, because optical communication is more affected by weather than is RF communication, it requires groundstation site diversity to mitigate the adverse effects of inclement weather on the link. An optical relay satellite is not affected by weather and can provide 24-hour coverage of deep-space probes. Using such a relay satellite for the deep-space link and an 8.4-GHz (X-band) link to a ground station would support high-data-rate links from small deep-space probes with very little link loss due to inclement weather. We have reviewed past JPL-funded work on RF and optical relay satellites, and on proposed clustered and linearly dispersed optical subnets. Cost comparisons show that the life cycle costs of a 7-m optical relay station based on the heritage of the Next Generation Space Telescope is comparable to that of an 8-station subnet of 10m optical ground stations. This makes the relay link an attractive option vis-à-vis a ground-station network.

Performance Evaluation of Intersatellite Free Space Optical Communication System with Varied Parameters and Transceiver Diversity
Free space optical communication provides a very important method for the satellites orbiting around the earth to communication with each other. In this paper , optical intersatellite link is modelled using optisystem software and then the effect of varying the transmitter power and aperture diameter of transmitter and receiver telescopes is analysed. The results shows that large transmitter po...

Artificial neural network (ANN) has application in communication engineering in diverse areas such as channel equalization, channel modeling, error control code because of its capability of nonlinear processing, adaptability, and parallel processing. On the other hand, wavelet transform (WT) with both the time and the frequency resolution provides the exact representation of signal in both doma...
متن کاملAn Earth-to-Deep-Space Optical Communications System With Adaptive Tilt and Scintillation Correction Using Near-Earth Relay Mirrors
The performance of an Earth-to-space optical telecommunications system is degraded by distortion (scintillation and tilt) of the beam as it propagates through the turbulent atmosphere. Conventional approaches to correct distortions that are based on natural or artificial guide stars are useful in, for example, astronomical imaging, but have practical difficulties or are not adequate to correct ...
متن کاملA CubeSat-Based Optical Communication Network for Low Earth Orbit
A common challenge in developing small-satellite-based Earth-observation (EO) missions is getting the data to the ground. Typically, most satellites download data via space-to-ground radio-frequency (RF) links, communicating directly with fixed ground stations as the satellites fly within range. For many next-generation EO missions, such as hyperspectral imaging or SAR missions, the volume of d...
متن کاملTransceiver Design and Performance Analysis of Free-space Optical Communication
In free-space optical communication links, atmospheric turbulence causes fluctuations in both the intensity and the phase of received light signal, impairing link performance. In this paper, we describe several communication techniques to mitigate turbulence-induced intensity fluctuations, that is signal fading. These techniques are applicable in the regime in which the receiver aperture is sma...
